Despite Black Ops 6 launching as the most successful Call of Duty game ever,?? ??? ?? it’s seen a rapid player count drop, having the lowest the franchise has seen in years.
According to a report from The Game Business using data from Ampere, Black Ops 6 has a lower overall player count than it did in both March 2023 and 2024.
When Black Ops 6 launched on Game Pass, Activision announced it was their most successful launch ever, attracting 33.7 million players. Their previous best was 2022’s Modern Warfare 2, which had 31.4 million players in its launch month.

In March 2025, Call of Duty had 20.6 million players, which is lower than both March 2024 (20.8M) and March 2023 (22.4M). So, despite having more players at launch, it had fewer players five months later.

We’ve always been able to see the player count steadily drop on Steam. However, it’s the smallest percentage of the Call of Duty player base, so while it showed a trend, it wasn’t indicative of the franchise as a whole.

Xbox has also seen a significant drop, going from the most popular place to play Call of Duty to the second, with PlayStation regaining the lead.

But as of March 2025, PlayStation has retaken the lead with at 33% of Call of Duty players (Xbox at 32.5%).

Why has the player count dropped so rapidly? It’s more likely lots of little things, rather than one big problem.
Black Ops 6 may have even less players than we thought?

However, server disconnects have been causing major issues in Season 3, so much so that Ranked Play has been temporarily disabled, so time will tell how much this impacts the player count going forward.
