In 1991,1,600 black women took out a similar ad in the Timesin defense of Anita Hill, who accused then nominee Clarence Thomas of sexual harassment. The ad was titled, "African-American Women in Defense of Themselves."
This time, the men stood up.
"We are 1,600 men who now stand behind both Professor Anita Hill, as well as Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, because we believe them,” the ad reads. "As men who are allies in the fight to end violence and harassment against women and girls, we write to express our strong support of Dr. Christine Blasey Ford … we believe survivors, and we call on all men of good will to stand with us to ensure that Dr. Blasey Ford’s story is carefully and fully examined without bias or prejudice.."
The signatories explain why they chose to include only men:
"We are a group of men with varying political and legal views. But we each believe women should no longer have to carry these burdens alone."
The campaign was assembled by the Phenomenal Women Action Campaign. The group put out a call to fund the ad over the weekend.
Stylistically, the ad is almost identical to the ad put out in 1991, except this time, it includes men.
It's a small change. And one that matters.
