GARDENA —?Hank Umemoto will discuss his memoir, “Manzanar to Mount Whitney: The Life and Times of a Lost Hiker,” on Sunday, July 14, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the JCI Nisei Veterans Hall, 1964 W. 162^ndSt. in Gardena.

Umemoto’s book alternates between his experiences in Manzanar during World War II and his postwar hiking trips. It is a colorfully written, sensitive and often funny account. As a teenager on his way to the internment camp, he catches a glimpse of Mt. Whitney, and the sight sparks his dream of hiking it someday.
