“Reiko’s Hina Dolls” will be screened at the Japanese American National Museum, 100 N. Central Ave. in Little Tokyo, on Saturday, March 7, at 2 p.m.
Directed by Komaki Matsui and written by Yumiko Hoyano and Komaki Matsui, this short film is based on the true story of a woman who brought a set of carefully preserved Japanese dolls to the Edmonton Japanese Community Association in 2005. They were wrapped in newspaper from Japan dated in the 1930s.
When asked how she was able to keep the dolls, because Japanese Canadians’ property was confiscated in the World War II internment process, the woman simply said, “We fled.”
This is a fictional account of what she and her family went through to keep the dolls in such great shape.
Free with museum admission. The DVD is available at the JANM Store. For more information, call (213) 625-0414 or visit www.janm.org.
