On the latest episode of the Office LadiespodcastJenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey chatted about the first half of the Season 4 episode, "Money," which fans may recall is the big introduction to the Schrute Farms bed and breakfast.
After learning about Dwight's agrotourism attraction Jim and Pam book their first weekend away together — in the irrigation-themed room, which has two twin beds — and have a one-of-a-kind, delightfully awkward stay.
"Money" was written anddirected by Paul Lieberstein (who plays Toby Flenderson,) so Fischer checked in with him to get all the details about Dwight's bed and breakfast. From the filming location to behind-the-scene pranks, here's everything you want to know about Schrute Farms.
PaulLieberstein told Fischer that he wrote the script for "Money" while he was vacationing in Russia, and that he actually got the idea for Dwight to run a bed and breakfast on a prior trip to Italy.
"He said that he was so excited to be able to write and direct this episode because it featured the first visit to Dwight's farmhouse at Schrute Farms," Fischer explained. "We saw the barn in 'The Initiation' and all that, but he got to completely invent Dwight's home and what it looked like and all of that stuff."
"He said that he got the idea for Dwight to run a bed and breakfast during a trip to Italy a couple of years before... He had seen a bunch of signs for this farm B&B stay — you go stay on people's farms in Italy. Paul just said he loved imagining Dwight as a proprietor of a bed and breakfast," Fischer explained. "He also told me he did so much to prepare for this episode. He really like over-prepared, because it was just a really big deal to him. And he wanted it to be full of so many details, and it was."
As mentioned in "The Initiation" episode of the podcast, the Schrute Farms scenes were filmed on the Disney Ranch in Santa Clarita, California.
The bed and breakfast scenes, however, used the "Olivia's House location," which was an empty farmhouse.
"This is a vast property and they have different areas where they film. So they have the barn right where you saw 'The Initiation' and then they have little houses and different areas that you can use to create sort of this rustic look for TV and film," Kinsey said.
Fischer added that though Dwight's bed and breakfast looked fully furnished, the houses are just empty, uninsulated shells without any props. So The Office's set designers had to "meticulously decorate every single room."
"[The houses are] freezing and drafty. And everything is a little bit dusty. Like if you sit on something a little cloud of comes out of it," Kinsey noted.
"I remember sneezing a lot," Fischer agreed. "It's dusty, it's old, it's rundown. You wouldn't want to lean against the wall. I'll just say that."
Like any good bed and breakfast, Schrute Farms is on Tripadvisor — and not just on the show...there's really a Schrute Farms Tripadvisor page up to this day.
"I want you guys to know we really did create a page on the real Tripadvisor for Schrute Farms. And our producers made two profiles and gave two reviews so you could go on after watching the episode and see these two reviews and the page," Fischer explained. "We hear one of them in the episode. That's the one from Jim and Pam. And their profile name was J&P2."
Sadly for Dwight the second early review was from Sprinkles' Mom.
"It says, 'I have to warn people about the proprietor of Schrute Farms. He may portray himself as a gentleman farmer, but he is not what he seems. He killed my cat Sprinkles. Who knows what he might do to you or your loved ones,'" Kinsey said.
"So the profiles are no longer there and those reviews are no longer there, but Schrute Farms is still a page on Tripadvisor. It has over 1,300 reviews and four stars," Fischer said.
Curious fans can find the page here, browse photos and property amenities, and leave a review of the unique Schrute Farms services.
"This is something that cracked me up. It says, 'Here are the languages spoken at Schrute Farms,'" Kinsey said. "Now, we know this is just Dwight Mose, but here are the languages spoken: Azerbaijani, Bosnian, Burmese, Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Icelandic, Portuguese. Oddly, not on the list is German, and Dwight answers the phone, 'Guten tag.'"
Office Ladies fans who've listened to "The Initiation" episode of the podcast likely remember that Jim and Pam's arrival to Schrute Farms was particularly memorable for Jenna Fischer because John Krasinski pulled a real-life prank on her during filming.
However, when the two are driving onto the property there's also an amazing shot of Mose running alongside their car.
"[Paul Lieberstein] came up with the idea for Mose running alongside the car while in a cafe in Russia," Fischer explained. "He said he started laughing out loud at the idea of Mose running alongside the car, 'like a dog,' and that's what he wrote in the script. So that moment was totally scripted, that Mose would run alongside the car like a puppy dog to greet the new visitors.
It's always a pleasure getting to learn more about Dwight's home life, and luckily there are more Schrute Farms scenes to come as the series progresses. Be sure to listen to the full podcast episode for more behind-the-scenes stories about filming "Money."
