20-year-old Katie loves tutorial porn. The famous sex tape porn videouniversity student, who is using her first name only for privacy reasons, tells Mashable that it helped her to understand sex during a time where it "completely confused" her. She felt that everyone was having sex on campus except for her and she felt really intimated about having sex for the first time.

"My flatmate recommended tutorial porn to me after I confided in her — she had worked on a tutorial-based porn film during film work experience," she tells Mashable. "I was amazed that you could masturbate and learn about sex at the same time. I definitely wouldn’t have had any idea it was out there."

Tutorial porn is exactly what it sounds like: your usual pornography but with tutorials built in. You can learn how to do specific sex acts while watching them happen before you. For example, you can find out how to give a great blowjob or eat someone out while watching a porn performer do exactly that. Or you can learn more about anal sex and orgies while porn performers demonstrate — breaking down each step to both satisfy and sexually stimulate the viewer, and offer education value.

What is tutorial porn?

Some tutorial porn has two sets of actors dividing the screen — the performers and the narrators who talk through the lesson aspect of the film. Other tutorial porn films, however, have the porn stars do the teaching. 

Tutorial porn used to be a quite niche category, mostly confined to a small handful of ethical porn providers, such as CHEEX, who provide a whole platform of tutorial porn, and Lust Films, who’ve collaborated with creators to create this kind of porn. But in recent years, it’s been on the rise, even popping up on mainstream pornography websites like Pornhub and xHamster.

What does tutorial porn actually involve?

Ethical porn company CHEEX creates and distributes ‘regular’ porn (but through an ethical approach with a focus on diversity) as well as tutorial-based porn hosted in their ‘pleasure academy’. 

Anneli von Klitzing, who directs the CHEEX Pleasure Academy, tells Mashable they started making tutorial porn as a natural progression from their already ethical porn, but also because they were aware some audiences were coming to porn to learn about sex. "Tutorial porn is a great way to differentiate performance and education in porn to audiences. It’s like we’re saying ‘if these are our tutorials, then regular porn is not a tutorial,'" they say.

Von Klitzing notes the great thing about tutorial porn is that the stimulation found with ‘performance’ porn isn’t lost. "It’s still explicit and sexually stimulating but you still have a chance to learn. That opportunity is rare and valuable. Tutorial porn is becoming such an exciting genre."

In the last two years, von Klitzing has seen a significant increase in interest for tutorial porn. CHEEX data shared with Mashable shows twice as many people are watching tutorial porn this year, compared with 2022 figures. Almost half (46 percent) of their entire user base also consumes the tutorial porn at some point, with 34 percent of tutorial porn viewers being 18-25-years-old, though the genre is watched by people of all ages, including over 60s.

Their top performing videos across CHEEX’s entire offering, include a lot tutorial porn videos. The most popular being: the blowjob tutorial, edging 101, and a guide to the vulva. 

Perhaps more surprisingly, tutorial porn is also performing well on Pornhub. The majority of Pornhub’s tutorial content is not produced in-house, so it’s hard to gauge whether sex experts have involvement in the scripting. Nonetheless, their tutorial content is packed with knowledge on everything from blowjobs to masturbating, delivered by porn stars doing the deed as they explain. 

And their viewers love it. How to Suck Cock the Right Way — Better Oral Sex in 10 Stepshas reached a whopping 12 million views on Pornhub, and even a video on the difference between the vulva and the vagina (and how to use both to increase sexual pleasure for yourself or your partner) has been watched by hundreds of thousands of people.

Porn star Roxy Fox, also known as ‘Sex Teacher’ is a professional intimacy coach and one of the most popular creators on Pornhub for this genre, providing tutorials on how to make girls squirt intersected with information about what squirting is and gaining more confidence with it, and how to pleasure women according to your particular penis shape/size. She blends sex tips with body confidence, and well, porn. As she teaches, she acts out the sex acts she is — a practical lesson, if you will. Her videos rake in millions of views.

Similarly, porn star Chechu Lain— known as ‘My Bad Reputation’, creates tutorial porn by having sex with a partner while explaining exactly what she’s doing — and why — straight into the camera. 

Tips for maximising pleasure are acted out and narrated in real-time, such as “Inch your body back like I am, so you can use a firm pelvis to rub against their body, and reach your hand back to stimulate the clit” in her video How to Orgasm Through Penetration.

At the start of each of her videos, she perches at the end of the bed, offering full explanations into what people struggle with about this particular sex act, and how to become more confident with it, before jumping into the pornographic lessons. Her videos have also reached millions of views. 

Von Klitzing thinks people are watching tutorial porn more, for a variety of reasons. "Lots of people feel inspired to try new acts from what they see in porn but don’t understand how, specifically to try it and how to communicate effectively so it can be done in a safe and fun way," she explains. 

"People may also feel nervous about certain sex acts they don’t feel they are great at, such as blowjobs, and tutorial porn is the one place they can get a step by step demonstration. Couples may also watch tutorial porn together if they decide to try something new, so that they have [the best shot of getting it right]," they add. 

Guidance for new sexual realms

For Katie, who had never watched porn before finding this kind, watching tutorial porn was all about figuring out "how the hell to do a blowjob." She watches CHEEX and My Bad Reputation’s tutorials and says her sex life as “improved massively” by watching. 

"I can’t even describe how scary it is to not have sex until you’re older, and everyone’s already been practising and getting to know themselves [sexually]."

Tutorial porn was really helpful for showing Katie that she had nothing to be afraid of, and seeing how sex worked step by step. "I’m a very visual learner so this was the best way for me to feel comfortable ahead of having new sex. It was like a visual version of the old Cosmo sex tip articles — accessible, friendly, a bit cheeky. And It’s still porny, like I always masturbate and finish watching it."

Tutorial porn also impacted 29-year-old photographer Alice’s sex life. She tells Mashable that she realised she was queer recently, after unexpectedly sleeping with a woman at a party. "I had no idea how to navigate queer sex, especially with stuff like using strap-ons. All my friends who’d known they were gay since they were really young figured all this stuff out ages ago with trial and error and I felt like I needed something more direct and actually helpful at my age," she says. 

That’s where the tutorial came in. "I actually get kind of emotional thinking about how helpful tutorial porn was to me. It was already a big thing on its own to be watching lesbian porn and getting off to it and that feeling so good to me. It was the cherry on top — a really important cherry — to learn from these gorgeous women I’m wanking over," she laughs. "I was watching them have strap-on sex while explaining what they were doing and mentally taking notes and then it was like oh, I also came!"

A more immersive, involved porn experience

Not everyone watches tutorial porn for the educational aspect, though. For some, there’s simply something very hot about being shown what to do. 34-year-old David — who will just be using his first name for privacy — says he loves watching tutorial porn 

"Tutorial porn offers a very different experience to more 'traditional' porn, as rather than watching other people have sex, you become an active participant, interacting with the instructor. It also puts the focus on your pleasure rather than someone else's," he tells Mashable.

He explains that it’s also a good opportunity to explore power dynamics. "I’m a sub so I love being told what to do. I watch tutorial porn for sex acts, like fingering, that I don’t think I actually need help with. I just love watching someone tell me how they like to be touched and what I should be doing, or not doing, in my own life."

Alice adds that tutorial porn tends to have a different tone than a lot of mainstream porn, which is what she tended to watch before exploring tutorials. "Sometimes porn can seem impersonal. Tutorial porn is quite intimate though. The stars interact with each other tenderly, and there’s something oddly sweet hearing women describe how to pleasure a woman, then watching her co-star act that out," she explains. 

Von Kiltzing importantly notes that whether we’re watching tutorial porn (or any kind of porn) to learn, to satisfy curiosity, for stimulation during masturbation, or just because we simply want to, we never stop learning from sex. "There is always something to learn whether you’re new to sex or you’ve been having it for years. Everyone has gaps in their knowledge and ways they can develop," she explains. "That’s the nice thing about tutorial porn, it celebrates curiosity."
