The Japanese American National Museum President’s Award was presented Oct. 24 to artist Nicole Maloney, whose “Out of Many One” (OOMO) Cube is the beginning of her personal global movement to create human oneness. The imagery on the cube depicts diversity across five aspects of humanity: race, religion, gender, socio-economic status, and sexual orientation.
According to JANM President and CEO Greg Kimura, the cube, located at the steps of the museum, “serves as a physical embodiment of what JANM seeks to share every day — that people are different from one another, and while those differences are to be celebrated, it is the commonalities among people that can and should unite us as people of the world.”
