GARDENA — A free screening of the award-winning “Lil Tokyo Reporter” film will be held at Gardena Buddhist Church, 1517 W. 166th St. in Gardena, on Sunday, Sept. 14, at 11:30 a.m.
The short film tells the story on the true-life struggles of Sei Fujii, an Issei newpaperman, who defended the Japanese of Los Angeles against unjust laws and unethical business practices from the Great Depression through internment and into the post-World War II era. He won a Supreme Court case to build the Japanese Hospital in Boyle Heights and had the California Alien Land Law overturned in 1952. He also laid the groundwork for redress and set a precedent for the future civil rights Leaders of today.
Executive producer Carole Fujita and director Jeffrey Chin will be present at the screening to make a short presentation and answer questions from the audience. Scheduling for actors Chris Tashima and Eijiro Ozaki to be present at the screening is under way.
