INDEPENDENCE —?A preview of “The Manzanar Fishing Club” and a guided tour will take place Saturday, Nov. 2, at the Manzanar National Historic Site, 5001 Highway 395, Independence.
At 12 p.m., see a 29-minute preview of the feature-length documentary, followed by Q&A with filmmaker Cory Shiozaki, in the Visitor Center’s West Theater.
At 1 p.m., join Shiozaki and special guest Michael Nakamura, second unit director of photography, for a guided driving and walking tour to key sites in Manzanar’s fishing history. Meet in the Visitor Center lobby. Bring water and wear sturdy shoes, a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
The film chronicles the World War II incarceration of Japanese Americans from a unique perspective: through the eyes of those who defied the armed guards, barbed wire and search-lights to fish for trout in the surrounding waters of the Eastern Sierra. By emphasizing the incarcerees’ personal stories, it goes beyond the confinement itself and instead highlights values — courage, responsibility and cooperation — that enable the human spirit.
Programs are free and open to the public.
