Samsung has fine-tuned its flagship foldable. (Say that five times fast.)
Announced at the company's Galaxy Unpacked event on Wednesday, the new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 updates last year's excellent Z Fold 4 with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor and an improved hinge that allows it to close completely flat like a book — no gaps.
SEE ALSO: Everything Samsung announced at its Galaxy Unpacked eventThe rest of the Z Fold 5's specs are carry-overs from its predecessor, as is its starting price of $1,799.99. (To quote Mashable's Alex Perry, "this is definitely an evolutionary year rather than a revolutionary one for the Z Fold line.") It may not make for an especially thrilling upgrade, but it's a nice new default for anyone thinking of buying their first foldable.
The Z Fold 5 comes standard in phantom black, cream, and icy blue, and in two exclusive colors on Samsung.com: gray and blue. It's officially set for release on Friday, August 11. Here's where you can pre-order it in the meantime:
The retail giant will give you a free storage bump to the 512GB model (a $120 value) and a free $200 Amazon gift card when you reserve an unlocked Z Fold 5 there. This is easily the best preorder deal out there right now for shoppers who aren't trading in their current device.
AT&T customers get a free storage upgrade whether they pay upfront or on an installment plan, and can get up to $1,000 off by trading in an eligible older device (in the form of 36 monthly bill credits).
The electronics store throws in a free storage upgrade, a free $100 gift card, and a free one-month Xbox Game Pass Ultimate membership worth $16.99 (sure!) when you pre-order an unlocked Z Fold 5 or activate one on a Verizon plan. You can get up to $1,000 off with a qualifying trade-in.
You'll get the free storage upgrade and up to $1,000 in trade-in credits by pre-order an unlocked Z Fold 5 directly through Samsung — not super exciting unless you're interested in those two exclusive colorways.
T-Mobile customers also get a free storage upgrade and up to $1,000 off in the form of 24 monthly bill credits when they trade in a device and add a line on a qualifying Go5G Plus plan.
Verizon has the same storage upgrade/trade-in/new line offers as its carrier compatriots, but it would probably be wiser to go through Best Buy instead: The retailer is matching those deals for Verizon customers and combining them with the aforementioned gift card and Game Pass freebies.
